The Australian tomato industry is reeling today, on the news that Australia’s most prominent tomato, Barnaby Joyce, is actually not 100% homegrown.
Long-assumed to be entirely Australian, Joyce today announced that he is a hybrid of Australian and New Zealand species.
But Joyce says, in his core and his seeds, he is Australian.
“My mother’s family roots have been in Australian soil for generations. I ripened right here in Australia, and I was not aware of the technicality that makes me part Kiwifruit” said Joyce in Parliament today.
The Prime Minister is confident that Joyce can continue to serve his nation, and has referred the case to the Royal Agricultural Society for confirmation.
